Another dead in KZN road rage incident
A taxi passenger has been killed in a road rage incident in Durban, barely a week after a motorist was shot in a similar incident, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday. Both cases are registered with the KwaDabeka police station, but are being handled by different investigating officers. Captain Bongani Khomo said a passenger in a minibus was shot dead when an argument erupted between its driver and that of a bakkie it collided with in Fourth Avenue, Clermont, on Sunday night. "It is alleged that the bakkie driver opened fire and a passenger was killed. The minibus driver was also injured and is in hospital," he said. The driver of the bakkie was later arrested and will appear soon in the Pinetown magistrate's court. He told the police that minutes after the collision, the occupants of the minibus alighted and attacked him and that he opened fire in self defence. Motorist Michael Mbonambi, 33, died in a similar incident in the KwaDabeka area, roughly two kilometres away on September 2. At the time, Khomo said Mbonambi was in his Volkswagen Golf in the suburb's E Section when a Polo Playa driving in the opposite direction took up space on his side of the road, leaving little space for him to pass. The cars stopped and from their windows, both drivers began arguing with one another. "The driver in the Polo Playa then reversed, made a U-turn and parked parallel to the Golf. The Polo driver then withdrew a firearm and opened fire," Khomo said. Mbonambi was shot in the head. He died at the scene. Police were summoned and made two arrests.
